If you want to prepare for an SHTF event, you should read this book. It provides a thorough discussion of how to use herbs in emergency medical situations.

Sara Baldwin starts by explaining why emergency medicine includes herbalism. This includes the botanical origins of herbal medications, why phytonutrients are important, and provides a short glossary of terms mentioned throughout the book.

In the next chapter, she describes different ways to use herbs as medicine. These include water infusion or tea, which is the most common; oil infusion, decoction, steams, and poultice.

Finally, she provides an A to Z list of the different herbs, what they’re used for, and in most cases, recipes you can follow to prepare. It’s important to note that some herbs, like aloe vera, don’t have recipes along with them, but they do have instructions on how to prepare them for use.

    My thoughts about this book:

I thought it was very well written, overall, although I did see one small typo where she said that barberry can used to “cleanse a digested system.” I’m not sure if she meant “cleanse the digestive system,” but that’s kind of what I thought she meant.

Other than that, my only other thoughts about this book were –

Are these recipes supposed to be followed before or after an SHTF situation? If before, ok. If after, It may have been a good idea to include information on how to prepare the teas, etc, when there’s no access to boiling water, etc. Just a few thoughts there. Otherwise, this was a very well written book and I learned a lot from it.

I loved this book and it really brought back the importance of just natural ingredients. This book has steps for people to try the man different ways to use the resources that we have our in nature towards our everyday lives. Sometimes we just forget that nature provides these things for us and we need to take a step back to use them for our benefits. I enjoyed this recommended book.

I digress-this starter reference book details why emergency preparedness includes herbalism. Godforbid something far worse than COVID-19 happens and we are to fend for ourselves. What would we use to feed, prevent/heal injuries and reduce pain relief? After picking this unexpected gem, I’ve come to discover-The wild (or nature)!

Nature’s pharmacy is the plants that surround us every day. We drive by open fields or rolling forests, never really thinking of the way to use the plants and herbs found in them. When you can’t buy what you need at the pharmacy (because the pharmacy has cleared shelves), you have to make what you need from the nature around you. That is, assuming that the land itself is not contaminated by disaster, of course.

The author includes beneficial information such as to what ways someone can use herbs as medicine. From water fusion/tea, decoction, steams, etc. The best part is the step-by-step instructions on how to properly use nature’s natural ingredients around you.

All in all, pick this book up because the more prepared you are, the better chance you’ll have of surviving an extreme emergency scenario.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was so informative learning about all the different herbs and how you can use the herbs to treat not only common illnesses like a cold or flu but even bruises, sprains, and oral health! I also really loved learning about different ways to incorporate the herbs like especially in teas. I highly recommend this book; it gave me so much knowledge that I never knew before. I also know now the side effects of the natural herbs and even currently being pregnant, this book lets you know if the natural herbs are safe for pregnant women. The author Sara Baldwin did a fantastic job, giving clear instructions, step by step how to prepare and use the herbs and she included very bright beautiful pictures in the book. So awesome, I highly recommend this book, very interesting and informative knowledge to learn about!

I wouldn’t necessarily consider myself a doomsday prepare, but I have become more interested in herbal medicines in the last couple of years. I found this book deeply informative, something I will return to again and again as a reference. It’s always helpful to be able to navigate natural plants and take advantage of their healing properties. Definitely recommend.
