Looking for a replacement to the old Monopoly board game in the family home, I chanced upon this novelty gift where Cardiff and its notable locations were mapped onto the board in lieu of the original properties Old Kent Road, Regent Street, and Mayfair etc. Having been a resident of Cardiff for 25 years I thought this would be a fine gift for Christmas and when we opened it up and played it, the family agreed. It’s a fresh new look at a classic, beloved board game and a great gift for fans of Monopoly who live in Cardiff.
For those interested in what locations made it into the game, here’s a list:
Brown – Chippy Alley, Roath Park
Blue – Bute Park, St Fagans Museum, Norwegian Church
Pink – Cardiff City FC, Cardiff Blues, Glamorgan Cricket
Orange – Techniquest, National Museum, City Hall
Red – Clark’s Pies, South Wales Echo, The Senedd
Yellow – St Davids Hall, New Theatre, Wellfield Road
Green – University of Glamorgan, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Millenium Stadium
Purple – Cardiff Castle, Millenium Centre
Utilities – Swalec Gas and Electric
“Travel” squares (traditionally stations) – Cardiff International Airport, Cardiff Bus, Cardiff Bay, Bus Station

It is Monopoly, but not as you know it. This version has all the hallmarks of a tourist in our Capital City. It would appeal more to “Locals” if the game represented the London version. With street names matching the relevant property market. Still it is interesting to play and laugh at certain scenarios created.

Bought as a birthday present, really glad I did. Rediscovered a childhood game in a new, familiar places, format. Love the idea.

Bought it for one of my grandchildren for his birthday who was 9 years old. His older brothers and younger brother and friends really enjoyed playing this on his birthday because they recognised a lot of the places. It was a big hit!!!
