This book is well-written and an easy read. It has a great deal of information for the target audience: beginners in the horse world. L. M. Taylor did a good job of introducing the many responsibilities of horse ownership. However, I found it was lacking in that she should have included pictures with the descriptions of the tools used for grooming, colors of horses, even the terms of blaze and star etc. (A picture is worth a thousand words.). There should have been at the least a small picture to help the reader more accurately understand and relate to what is being said especially if one is writing to a beginner. There is so much to understand when one is beginning. I also wish when speaking of fencing she would have mentioned the recommendation of a minimum height of five feet for horses. My horses can clear a shorter fence with ease. Overall I would recommend this book to someone just starting out or even someone who has been in the world of horse ownership for a while.

I wish I had something like this to read when I first became hooked on horses over 60 years ago. Very easy to read and full of info. Having owned horses for 40+ years and read and collected countless books this may have saved me time and money! I have been breeding and training horses for 30 years now and I had a few points I feel need more explanation
1. The idea of barefoot/ shod horses need more explanation/research
2.The communication side too is not quite as straightforward as stated. Round pens do not work successfully for some ‘horse personalities’
3.Regarding temperature – no rugs is not an option for those horses, and I have had a few, who do not really grow a substantial winter coat to be left naked – even with appropriate shelter facilities.
On the whole I enjoyed reading the book and found it very informative for a ‘newbie’ to the ‘game’. Thanks.

I loved all history of horses that the writer had a good knowledge of different aspects of horses anatomy, history and emotional connections.
I enjoyed all parts of the book and would recommend it for people who are just starting out with horses and want to know a good basic knowledge.

This book is good for someone wanting to understand the basics of equines. Would be good for teens or adults who are just starting out and have not had any experience, though some of the terminology is not traditional.
Overall a good basic begginers book

They say every day is a school day! You never stop learning about horses. This book will appeal to anyone interested in horses. The book is easy to read and understand and is suitable for all ages. I have been around horses for over 40 years and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I would recommend horsey people add this to their library.

Thus is a great book for people that have little experience with horses but maybe want to own their own one day.
Also students embarking on basic horse foundation courses, might like to read this book as an expansion of their understanding of everything to do with horses.

I found this book to be a great enjoyable, knowledgeable, informative, exploratory study of horses. The different types, how they first became a horse, the colors, what horses are used for, loud & soft sounds might frighten the horse into bolting, to get away from the noise, their sensitivity to smells also, the skills you must learn to care for your horse after you buy your 1 horse. What you need to care for your horse, such as what to feed them, give them water, blankets, food, too much noise, or sharp loud noises, startles the horse, adjusting to the individual horses new life. Caring for the sick & enjoying the time spent with them, treasuring the moments spent with the horses, giving them care & lovely doing daily chores with them, brushing them down, or cooling them down when it gets hot, or warming them when it is cold outside, giving them shelter, & other care. Sometimes riding the horse, or time walking around the horse ,with a lead familiarizing the horse & others to your scent. So coming up soon riding the horse, in stages, then moving up, as you learn more about the horse, his or her temperament . How they address the issues with your vet (doctor), in caring for your horse.

Everything horse for beginners was and easy read and very informative. I owned a horse for a couple of years before a surgical setback forced me to sell, but I wish I had access to this book before I got started in the horse owning process. This book explains so much about horse care, behavior, choosing the right horse for you, training, and so many wonderful details. This is a great read even if you are just going to be around horses and you are not a horse person. It’s excellent information to have just to know how to be around them. If you are the primary horse person and read this book, also have your partner/spouse and kids read it too. I can’t say enough about it. Read the book! 🙂
