This was a very enjoyable experience on the footplate of a beautiful 15 inch gauge steam engine, under expert supervision for two return trips along the steeply graded half mile line. By the final (uphill) leg of the journey I had full control of the regulator and whistle – and coaled the firebox before we set off. And we got the three coach train to the top without incident! If you like small steam trains, this friendly line is definitely worth a visit.

This was a day to remember. The steam railway is a family business that is looked after with a great deal of passion by the family. The railway is around a mile round-trip. As we were early my wife and I had a free trip initially and two hot drinks! David gave a quick run through of health and safety issues and we were off straight-away. I was able to drive two round trips under David’s expert supervision. I strongly recommend this experience to both young and old.

It was everything I had hoped for. My instructor, David, right from the off was excellent, his knowledge expertise and skill was very apparent and his instruction was clear, calm and concise. By the 4th run back up the track I was able to take the train up the track and park it in the station by myself, still of course under the watchful and helpfull eye of David. If you like steam I cannot recommend this highly enough. You also get a free ticket for your partner and a drink! BRILL!

My wife booked me this experience to rekindle my childhood love of trains. I’m now in my 30s and by no means a fanatic anymore, but it was an amazing experience to sit on the footplate and take control of a train. Pete was my instructor and I can’t thank him enough for guiding me through everything so easily. His passion is clear and it only enhanced the experience. Had a great time the Sherwood Forest Railway. There is a good-sized and well stocked play area for children and a small shop that serves refreshments. Having booked the driving experience we each got a free drink and my wife and our dog were allowed to travel free in the carriage. The staff could not have been nicer or more helpful. Peter, the train driver, was terrific. He gave me a safety briefing and showed me how to operate the engine. Just a pleasure! And great fun!

Fantastic driving experience on the Sherwood Forest Railway. A friendly welcome followed by friendly expert instruction and reassurance on the beautiful little steam engine “Smokey Joe” during a trip along the line and back. The line passes through lovely countryside with wildlife and farm animals to spot along the way. Very enjoyable! The site has very good play facilities for children and would make a great family day out. Train rides not expensive.

My only caveat would be that you were limited with the controls you could use on the engine.
