I love the way this is written; truly knowledgeable and well researched, but it doesn’t take anything away from the pure joy of food and drink one bit. It’s both a fun read and a genuinely helpful reference guide at the same time. Finally, a wine expert’s advice without the expectation of a massive budget!

I’m new to wine and have just started my WSET level 1. This book was a lovely little book to read to give you an insight into fabourings and pairings, written in no nonsense English and not highbrow in the least. Would def recommend.

If you’re like me and have felt an overwhelming anxiety when faced with choosing what wines to order when at a restaurant, or even when browsing the ever expanding wine section in my local supermarket, this book will definitely take the edge off. It’s simple, offers interesting wine pearings (who thought you could pair wine with a lamb donor kebab! Wasn’t on my bucketlist of pairings but it certainly is now!) And most importantly offers the fundamental basics of wine pairings, which is excellent for me being a complete novice.

I very rarely broadened my horizons in terms of wine selection before reading this book and tended to just play it safe by sticking to bottles of wine that I knew, which was very limited. I’d say I have definitely found a few new favourites, as well as some that I’d prefer not to try again! But its all a learning curve and part of the fun.

Would recommend this book to anybody that is interested in developing their knowledge on wine pairings and willing to try new wines. Also good for meal planning and inspiration for what to cook, even more so now that I’m stuck at home during lockdown.

The last wine book I bought was a heavyweight effort from a Master of Wine. I am sure all the information is there; the problem is 300 plus pages of dense type. So it stays on the bookshelf, unread and unloved. Not this sparky effort. Lasagne tonight? No problem: look it up in the index, turn to the page and there you have a top choice, second choice and an if all else fails choice. Only takes seconds. Chicken nuggets? Ditto. Chicken korma. no problem. and so on. This is above all a practical book for anyone who wants a glass of wine that will go well with their meal, wants to avoid pomp and ceremony, plastic-melting prices and taste disasters. With this little book you will get good food/wine matches from any supermarket or off licence. I have found that this book does its job really well and for food/wine matching beats even Hugh Johnson’s Pocket Wine Guide. That has only 12 pages of food/wine tips. This book is tops for what it promises to do. Recommended.
