Well written, full of interesting information and great photos. Book was physically high-quality and sturdy. If you like the Tasting History show you’ll love this book.

Some of the recipes are NOT for me. But I have been having a lot of issues with my stomach as I have been getting older but I have found out that I would have a hard time finding something to eat in the age of rose water but that is no fault of this book. I have had no quality issues with the book, I am a very messy cook and despite what others have said it does hold up under a messy cook. A lot of the ingredients are not things that I would normally have in my cabinet but I just have to be strategic in picking a couple recipes with a lot of the same “weird” ingredients so I can use them up without the extra going to waste before they expire. I find it fascinating to get an approximation of what ancient flavors of food were, even if they do not suit me. I wish Max would have been doing this when I was younger and had a more forgiving stomach. For someone that has watched every episode of his, I find it fascinating people complaining that these are not indigenous recipes, he explains every time that most of those recipes were not written down and we are lucky to have anything at all. The substitutions of the impossible to find ingredients makes sense when, those ingredients are not common in most, if not all, regions, but to each his own. It is fun to experiment with not often used techniques and flavors and I appreciate this book a lot.

After watching some of the author’s fascinating youtube videos on the same topic with my partner, I got her this book as one of her Christmas gifts. She sat and read it, enthralled, and is looking forward to trying many, many of the recipes.

We are big fans. Admittedly the recipes are not as great as modern recipes. But it is novel. I would recommend buying this book if you’re interested in history.

I have followed Max Miller on YouTube for some years and was happy to see that he released a cookbook. I was even happier when I saw that it was a really good one, with beautiful pictures, great recipes and solid background to each and every dish. Highly recommended to any aspiring cooks and history nerds out there!

The book arrived in perfect condition as you can see in the pictures. No dents, no scratches and nothing at all damaging the cover or the pages.
I love the show and the book has the same energy of it. Simply fantastic.

Bought as a present for a foodie and historical buff, this book hit the mark with all the information provided about food and recipes origins. We’ve tried making a few of the recipes too (pecan pie, delicious), all in all very happy with the book.
