My daughter bought me the Spa Valley Railway steam train ride for two for my birthday last year, but we waited for the better weather.
The venue is wonderful and super-friendly. The train trip is really very enjoyable indeed. You have three stops other than the one you began at and they are all interesting.
One word of warning though, the voucher cost was £35 but the tickets are only £10 each on the day, so it actually cost £15 more than it needed to!!! That was a big surprise, no idea why

After months of sunshine, our railway experience saw a day of rain but it didn’ t spoil our enjoyment. The long period of dry weather meant that steam hauling had been suspended due to safety concerns. Ho! Ho! Means we will have to go back again to experience a steam haul. Lovely carriage cafe and small history museum and living workshop. Thourouly enjoyable experience
Drew –
A really great journey on the spa valley railway
Debbie –
An enjoyable day on this train experience ,would recommend it for all ages
Peter G –
It brought back many fond of memories from the past in my youth, with the sounds and smells of working steam engines.
Frances –
The staff are brilliant and very friendly
Sandra HUBBARD –
Made a relaxing day out, sitting back and enjoyed the ride. Stopping off along the way too was easy. Nice people running the train.
Diana –
Lovely day out, travelling on a diesel driven train with old carriages, and back on a steam-driven one. We loved it.
bill –

Keith –
My daughter bought my wife and I a day on the Spa Valley railway as a Christmas present last year and we were eventually able to use it in June.
What a wonderful experience it turned out to be. So good in fact that we plan to repeat it later on this year.
Ena Mileham –
My husband, my daughter and really enjoyed our train trip with you very well organised and friendly staff, we were blessed with good weather and the scenery was lovely, enjoyed seeing the lupins and rhodedreniums in blossom
Della –
A nice little trip through the kent countryside ending at a lovely pub for lunch. Unfortunately points trouble at tunbridge wells meant a taxi on the return journey arranged and paid by spa valley. Customer service very very good – nice guys complimentary tea coffee and a return trip trip on a date to suit us.
MARION BUTCHER –
This was a small Christmas present for us and we really did not know what to expect, as we knew so little about this small railway line.
Wonderful experience, we enjoyed everything about it, the staff, the train, the scenery and indeed the variety of passengers. Perhaps we were just lucky, as the weather was also good. We would go again and ride up and down the line for longer – with a glass of wine or gin and tonic in hand. as indeed this can be purchased aboard.
Rosemarie –
After the initial disappointment of no steam trains running it turned out to be a good day out. The stations were well kept and interesting. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Refreshments were basic but there were places to eat near each station. The scenery was lovely, hadn’t realised Tunbridge Wells was so rural. Most of the attractions near each station were quite a walk away which we found difficult so we just enjoyed the time riding the train. Overall a good day out.
Chris –
A great day on the Spa Valley Railway. The 4 stations have been beautifully restored with plenty of nostalgia. The train ride was great and all the staff were very friendly. Full steam ahead!
john –

THANK YOU ALL at Spa Valley Railways.

I was given a voucher for a steam train ride for two on the Spa Valley Railway. We drove to Eridge, where there was plenty of parking. The station is charmingly retro. Depending on the time, you could be pulled by a steam or diesel train (we managed a lovely steam engine both trips). We went to Tunbridge Wells and walked to The Pantiles, very old and charming. Lunch, shopping, then back home. A great day out.
John Morgan –
had an enjoyable trip on the Spa Valley Railway and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in railways.
Debra O’Sullivan –
We booked our spa valley steam train experience a few weeks ahead of the date . We arrived it was a
Lovely crisp autumnal day. There was a large sign when we arrived saying no steam today. It was a shame but we went on a lovely old diesel train

Elise John –
Had a lovely trip on the steam train, shame the weather hampered the enjoyment slightly as we weren’t able to getting off and explore the stops along the way. But we will be back again on a sunny day
David –
The train ride was amazing and the station stop offs were excellent lots to do very enjoyable
Angela –
Lovely day out on the Spa Valley Railway. We were able to park nearby at Tunbridge Wells and enjoyed our trip up the line and back. We then walked I to Tunbridge Wells for a leisurely lunch. The staff at the Spa Valley Railway were very friendly and smartly turned out. A reminder of a bygone age.
John –
First class. Friendly folk. No hassle. Dog was welcome.
Sherry –
What can I say! A wonderful day had by myself and my family. The Staff and crew were so lovely an accommodating.
Their site was really easy to use to book my tickets and Mark helped me combine my Virgin tickets with the rest of my booking!
When we arrived the staff were lovely, the conductor cracking a joke with us every time he passed, (mainly due to the size of the party!)
We all had a lovely day hopping on and off the train, will be going back very soon!
Janice –
One station closed .we paid more for our virgin tickets than the cost of the normal train ticket😦
Mark –
The weather was dreadful, wet and windy, so unfortunately we were not able to linger outside, but the trains – steam and diesel – were great. We enjoyed chuffing up and down the line whilst enjoying a coffee in the buffet car. The volunteers were all friendly, knowledgeable and obviously passionate about the railway. We enjoyed watching the video presentation about the railway and we purchased some small items in the shop.
Stephen Guilliland –
Really enjoyable experience
June –
Great staff very friendly and helpful
David –
Lovely to see so many old trains especially the steam engines at work. We took my 87 year old parents and they loved it. Such a scenic ride and easy to stop off for a look around and coffee.
Staff were so friendly and helpful.
Jackie –
Fab day out on the Spa Railway. Staff really helpful & knowledgeable. Carriages, stations & gardens all super clean. Would recommend.
Ray –
Had a really good day at spa valley railway, a really smooth ride and staff very friendly and helpful
Mary –
We parked at Eridge because of the large car park. We travelled to Tunbridge Wells. There’s not a lot to do there unless you want to go shopping. We travelled back to Groombridge & alighted & walked to Groombridge Place, which takes about 15 minutes. Groombridge Place is very good. Nice adventure walk in the woods, lots for kids, lovely gardens, nice short boat trip (extra cost each way) Train staff very helpful & courteous.
Sue –
Prior to the steam train experience we received an email to say that there was no driver available with the knowledge to drive a steam train but there would be a diesel engine instead. This in no way spoiled our enjoyment. The staff were all friendly and the stations were beautifully kept. Well done to all the volunteers for giving us a day full of good memories.
Mandy –
It was great going on the steam train but just wasn’t long enough thought it would be the whole day but it was just 1 1/2 hours found ourselves with nothing to do for the rest of the day
Angelo –
Had a fab day out at Spa Valley Railway. Love a heritage steam line and Spa Valley railway is great. The stations that have been preserved are a real treat. Close your eyes and you’ll be back in time with the sounds of the steam engine and the very comfy seats on the teain.
Claire –
We had a wonderful day out on the Spa Valley Railway. We took our parents, elderly and disabled. The staff at Spa Valley couldn’t have been more helpful. A brilliant day out. Thank you.
Brian –
Enjoyable trip
David –
Really enjoyable trip. Staff very friendly. I remember steam trains very well as a child. Most nostalgic.
Richard –
Unfortunately we were unable to go to this as I wasn’t well.
Is it possible to rebook please?
Richard –
Amazing day out. Train driver allowed anyone that wanted to stand on the footplate and explain the controls etc.
He said that they want to show everyone that wanted the workings of the steam train answer any questions.
Fantastic experience aas always wanted to stand on a steam engine. All other staff and volunteers went the extra mile to make your day out special. Would definitely recommend.
Thank you All
Jax –
A pleasant morning travelling on steam/diesel trains.
Staff were volunteers and were very helpful and friendly. The actual train journey was only a few miles long so couldn’t really feel the train in full swing. We were lucky to have lovely weather which helped with the experience. Worth a visit .
David –
Great all-day ticket. An Christmas present from my daughter. Fabulous scenery and friendly knowledgeable staff. Not the longest line and not the biggest steam engines but a must for steam and early diesel enthusiasts. Do some research into the four stations and the area first or just sit back and enjoy the ride with something from the buffet car. Highly recommended.
S. Thompson –
Super trip on the steam train. Would liked to have been told if the linger stop at the station with drinks as could have got off to get refreshments.
George –
Really good day, fantastic helpful staff
Julia –
Could have bought the tickets cheaper at the station!
Hot drinks were by way of a very temperamental vending machine. I and 2 others had repeated issues trying to pay by card and have a drink dispensed. A tea room would be nice at the station.
But the staff were friendly, and the carriage was clean.
Sue –
Received a voucher for two to travel on the Spa Valley steam railway trip from granddaughter -, had to extend it for a month for free which was good. Had fabulous day out from Tunbridge Wells, stopping at High Rocks, Groombridge and Eridge where we got off. Lovely couple offered us a lift up the steep Forstall Hill then we walked a further mile to have lunch at the Neville Crest & Gun pub – superb roast and lovely atmosphere. Smashing day out
